Distinction Gallery Presents:  “Project 57” in Honor of Charles Leslie Walker.  It is a group showing to benefit the Lewy Body Dementia Association running August 9th – September 6th.

Distinction Gallery is proud to host this most special gathering of artists to pay tribute to the artistic spirit and likewise honor the memory and life of Charles Leslie Walker. There will be an opening reception on August 9th from 6-11 PM featuring catered food by A Taste of Florence and beer provided by Karl Strauss. This showing will be presented auction style and will end at ten pm.  There is a $10 Entry fee. All Distinction Gallery commissions will be donated.

Sun Aug 17 San Diego Model Railroad Museum Circus Day
  On Sunday, August 17, 2008 you too can run away with the circus… or at least be part of the over the top, high flying spectacular celebration at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. All families will be greeted by our wacky clowns, circus band, as well as plenty of performers located throughout the Museum. Everyone will be able to enjoy model circus trains running on our railroad tracks. Participate in building your own circus train, get your face painted, and have Esmeralda tell your fortune.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is open Tuesday-Friday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM and 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Children under 15 years old are free, adult admission is $6.

Sun Sep 14 Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) VisionWalk
 

The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) is pounding the pavement nationwide to increase awareness
and research dollars through VisionWalk, FFB’s signature fundraising event. VisionWalk will be on Sunday, September 14th at 10am beginning at Mission Bay Park - DeAnza Cove.  VisionWalk will raise money to support cutting-edge research to find the preventions, treatments and cures for retinal degenerative diseases.

VisionWalk is a 5K (3.1 miles) walk is designed to raise awareness and dollars for the fight against retinal degenerative diseases. All walk routes are wheelchair and stroller accessible. How can you help? Form a Team with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, walk as an Individual, volunteer at the walk, become a Sponsor of the Walk, make a donation to a walker.  Visit www.VisionWalk.org  for more information

Education For Education 2008: The College Strategy Roadmap is THE EVENT for families who are preparing themselves and their children for the journey to and through college. Featuring three expert speaker presentations, a scholarship award ceremony, and access to an abundance of resources, E4E is designed to educate parents and students alike to create family-based roadmaps to guide them through the college years. Families will get the truth about sending their kids to college, from learning about financial aid, scholarships and grants to understanding the admissions process, SAT/ACT test preparation, and much, much more.

Scholarships valued up to $2,500 will be awarded to families who register prior to the event. E4E will be held on September the 17th from 5:30-9:00 p.m. at the Encinitas Community Center, Banquet Rooms A & B. Sat Sep 20 24th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day
  Mark your calendar for September 20th for the biggest volunteer cleanup event in San Diego County and join together with your community in keeping our ocean, coastlines and waterways clean and free of debris.

Each year, San Diego Coastkeeper (SDCK), I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) and the California Coastal Commission partner to coordinate more than 60 coastal, inland and underwater cleanup sites throughout San Diego County as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD), an annual statewide and international cleanup effort to support the marine environment.

Last year 6,212 volunteers participated in removing 94,358 pounds of trash and recyclables from San Diego County and Baja California beaches. CCD is a great way for the community to help restore our beaches and waterways, and learn how individual action can make a tremendous difference to keep our beaches and watersheds pollution free.

ONGOING: Letters of Hope for Military Personnel
 

Response to this "Letters of Hope" posting has been tremendous -- thank you!

The Letters of Hope organization is asking for, simply that.  Letters of hope to send to our military personnel who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Cards and letters that offer love, support and understanding for our military -- along with donations of simple comfort items that are on our soldiers' wish list, such as wash cloths, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, books, magazines, DVDS and any kind of packaged junk food (a fun treat from home).

ONGOING: Goodwill and the Digital TV Conversion
  Goodwill Industries International is part of a national coalition educating the public about the February 2009 transition from analog (over-the-air) to all-digital broadcasting, which could leave some households without television reception unless steps are taken now. The federal government is offering a limited number of coupons for $40 that can be used toward the purchase of DTV converter boxes, which will allow consumers to continue to use their analog TV sets. The converter boxes will be for sale at major retailers, such as Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City and others.
